I could sum up the jays season in two words, Ricky Romero.....
He is awful right now, so bad they are skipping one of his starts so they don't have to put him in life saving therapy.
As the jays sit right now they are 64-75 and have no hope of making even a run at the playoffs, which considering the injuries is reasonable. Brett Lawrie, JP Arencibia, Brandon Morrow, Jose Bautista, Sergio Santos, all these guys play a huge role in the jays success. All of these guys have missed ALOT of time with injuries. When you have that many pieces missing from your team you are in trouble. Add in an ace with about a 6 era you are fucked....and thats the nicest way to say it.
Not everything is bad though, Edwin has been excellent, Casey Jansen has been solid, they got a chance to see Gose and Hechavvaria in the majors and would have had D'Arneau if he didn't get hurt too. Aside from that I struggle to find more positives.
The bullpen has been awful, the rotation is an on going cycle of new guys. The hitting has been the definition of streaky, o ya did i say the bullpen has been awful. John Farrell has had very little to be positive about and he has held the guys today. There is a reason why people aren't throwing hissy fits on the field and its John Farrell. The guy is a rock.
The one thing that has baffled me is the optimism from jays fans for NEXT YEAR. How many years have they been saying "well next year it will be better", please aside from hopefully staying healthy whats going to change. Ricky is still an unproven ace, morrow can't stay healthy, we have no one playing 1B, the bullpen will be a mystery, Sergio Santos is very unproven still, and were banking on guys who have barely sniffed the majors to produce.
Say what you will about my next statement but look at every team that wins a world series, they have one huge name on the roster. Now Jose Bautista is almost there and Lawrie also has the making of a guy like this. But if the jays want to really make a run next year, they 1 need some depth, and 2 they need a big name player. Why not go after Mike Napoli to play 1B, why not at least make offers to guys like Michael Bourn, Josh Hamilton, Curtis Granderson, even a Delmon Young or Torii Hunter. Or go after someone to lead your rotation of young guys, Zach Greinke, Dan Haren, James Shields are all set to be free agents in 2013, finally there thats whole bullpen issue there are lots of names out there that could solidify a shaky bullpen.
Anyone you ask say the jays have the money and according to some people players want to go there. So why can't they attract a big name guy. I understand building through the farm and i support it, I don't like teams who go out and throw the bank at guys to play for them, but to overpay 1 or 2 guys to take the next step is something a winner has to do.
There are exceptions to every rule though and if the jays don't go out and sign someone i hope they are the exception because i know my optimism is running out and for some reason the year they are supposed to break out never seems to be next year.
Again these are my opinions you are more than welcome to disagree and post a comment. I don't intend to offend anyone, thank you for reading.
